Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls will be conducted in the state after the upcoming Assembly elections, emphasizing that it will be executed in a “very extensive and proper manner,” surpassing the current Special Revision (SR) process. Sarma explained that while an SR is ongoing, the SIR was requested to occur sooner; however, the Election Commission opted for the SR due to the pending status of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The final NRC, released on August 31, 2019, excluded 1,906,657 individuals and included 31,121,004 from a total of 33,027,661 applicants, but it remains unnotified by the Registrar General of India. This situation has led to the SR decision, according to Sarma. Currently, the draft electoral roll indicates 25,201,624 electors, reflecting a 1.35% increase since the last final roll published in January 2025, with the ongoing SR resulting in 786,841 new entries and 447,196 removals during the review. Identified issues include 478,992 deceased voters, 523,680 relocations, and 53,619 duplicates, though these names will not be purged until formal requests are submitted. The final electoral roll is set to be published on February 10, 2026.
