Environmental experts and academics have raised alarms regarding the escalating air pollution levels in Guwahati, emphasizing the necessity for robust policy measures and enhanced public awareness to confront this environmental crisis. This concern was highlighted during a meeting organized by the Assam Science Society, focusing on urban environmental protection. The complexity of the air pollution issue in Guwahati has intensified due to rapid urbanization, an increase in vehicle numbers, and unregulated construction activities. It has been reported that approximately 80 percent of the city’s air pollution stems from vehicular emissions and road dust. Additionally, the vehicle count in Guwahati has surged by around 40 percent over the last five years, further degrading air quality.
Key speakers during the meeting underscored the urgency of minimizing emissions from construction activities, controlling dust pollution, and implementing environmentally sustainable development policies. They advocated for improved urban planning strategies and stricter oversight of pollution sources to curtail the growing crisis.
Experts noted that in addition to vehicular emissions, factors such as brick kilns, construction dust, and various industrial activities significantly contribute to the decline in air quality. The potential health ramifications of continued inaction are alarming, warranting immediate measures to address these challenges.
Collaboration among authorities and citizens was deemed essential to effectively tackle air pollution. Proposals included promoting public transportation, incorporating cleaner technologies, and fortifying environmental regulations as vital steps to diminish pollution levels in the city. The discussion also highlighted the crucial role of public awareness, empowering citizens to engage actively in environmental protection and sustainable urban development.
