Abbott’s Project Ksheersagar is making waves in India’s dairy sector by empowering farmers, improving milk production, and creating a resilient supply chain for nutrition products. Launched in 2022 in partnership with international non-profit TechnoServe, the initiative currently reaches over 12,000 dairy farmers and 51,000 dairy animals across Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
The program focuses on farmer training in dairy farm management, financial literacy, and business practices. Infrastructure support, including 130 village-based milk collection centers with cold storage, has enabled farmers to increase milk production by 55%, reduce veterinary costs by 60%, and double their incomes. Abbott expects 60% of the milk powder used in its nutrition products in India to come from these farmers, benefiting families reliant on science-based nutrition.
In Kolkata, local dairy vendors and cooperatives are already feeling the impact. The consistent, high-quality milk supplied by Project Ksheersagar farmers is improving availability for retailers and ensuring better-quality dairy products for urban consumers. Market analysts note that the initiative strengthens Kolkata’s dairy ecosystem while providing sustainable livelihoods to rural farmers.
“Project Ksheersagar not only enhances farm productivity but also secures a reliable, locally sourced supply of milk for Abbott’s nutrition products,” said Shibasish Pramanik, Supply Chain Director, Abbott India.
