In East Khasi Hills, the District Magistrate has enacted an immediate ban on the transportation, storage, sale, and distribution of illegally imported fish from Bangladesh. This order, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023, prohibits any movement or marketing of such fish without appropriate legal documentation, and forbids the use of vehicles for these activities. The directive responds to significant reports of fish smuggling through various routes, citing risks to public health, legal compliance, biodiversity, and economic stability.
Violators will face serious legal consequences under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, as well as relevant laws such as the Customs Act and Foreigners Act. This action follows a similar order issued by the District Magistrate of Eastern West Khasi Hills, which highlighted concerns over illegal migration and cross-border smuggling impacting national security.
Amid public concerns regarding safe fish consumption, the Commissionerate of Food Safety in Meghalaya has confirmed that fish imported from Assam meets safety standards. Laboratory analyses of 45 samples showed no detectable heavy metals. Regular inspections are conducted to ensure compliance, and fish vendors must register to sell legally, with recommendations for consumers to wash fish before cooking. The Commissionerate plans to collaborate with Assam authorities to enhance food safety measures.
