District road safety committee reviews progress on key directives in Sonitpur

The District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) met in the District Commissioner’s Office conference hall in Sonitpur to assess the status of activities performed in response to directives given during the last session. Twahir Alam, Additional District Commissioner, presided over the meeting, which was attended by Tezpur Municipal Board Chairperson Ramen Tamuli, Additional Superintendent of Police (HQ) Madhurima Das, DRSC Member Secretary Ajit Kumar Medhi, and other committee members. Initially, the status of measures conducted in compliance with the directions issued at the previous DRSC meeting was examined. The committee undertook in-depth talks on various critical road safety concerns, including the necessity for effective speed-limiting measures, the removal of footpath encroachments, the management of e-rickshaw permits and designated routes, and the ongoing problem of parking congestion in the town area. The Inspector of Schools told the committee that the registration of ‘Chota Cop’ volunteers and awareness sessions at educational institutions were proceeding as planned.

The District Transport Officer (DTO) indicated that tight helmet monitoring is underway, and offenders are being counseled accordingly. The responsible department was directed to ensure that the approach roads to the Mission Chariali Flyover were maintained immediately and that any potholes were repaired as soon as possible. Additional SP Madhurima Das revealed road safety data from the iRAD (Integrated Road Accident Database) platform, indicating a total of 24 road accidents recorded in the district in July, including two fatalities. The group also addressed bringing all of the district’s hospitals on board the iRAD platform to enable real-time data reporting and enhanced emergency coordination. The discussion also covered the Rah-Veer Yojana, a new program introduced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). The program seeks to recognize and reward Good Samaritans who voluntarily aid accident victims during the vital golden hour by arranging for prompt transportation to hospitals. This system will give financial incentives to increase public engagement in emergency response.
