The flood situation in Upper Assam is likely to worsen as the Dikhow River in Sivasagar district has reached the severe flood stage. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the river crossed the severe flood mark at 12 am on Thursday.
Following the rise in the river’s water level, the ASDMA has issued a public advisory asking people to stay away from riverbanks and avoid unnecessary movement in flooded areas. The authority warned that the increasing water level has raised the risk of flooding and riverbank erosion.
Residents, especially those living in low-lying and riverside areas, have been advised to remain alert and follow all safety guidelines. The government is closely monitoring the situation, while emergency response teams have been kept on standby to respond to any emergency.
Meanwhile, the flood situation in neighbouring Charaideo district has worsened, with fresh flooding reported in several locations. A sudden inflow of runoff from nearby hills inundated the Chumoni area of Tengapukhuri, disrupting normal life and increasing the risk of displacement and property damage.
The water level of the Dorika River has also risen significantly, adding to flood concerns in the district. While officials have acknowledged the deteriorating situation, the district administration has urged residents not to panic, remain vigilant, follow official advisories and stay prepared for any emergency as the situation continues to remain unpredictable.
