Diageo India on Tuesday unveiled a comprehensive transformation of McDowell’s No.1, one of India’s largest whisky brands, marking a significant repositioning of the brand in the mass premium whisky segment. The reinvention, part of the brand’s 125-year history, combines an upgraded blend featuring extra Scotch with a redesigned bottle and contemporary visual identity.
McDowell’s No.1 sells more than 30 million cases annually. The upgraded liquid blends select imported Scotch, Indian malts and premium grain spirits, matured in select oak and American barrels and blended across India and Scotland. Diageo said the blend underwent more than 100 quality checks and delivers vanilla, malt, wood and gentle spice notes with a smooth finish.
The company said the revamp reflects changing consumer preferences, with quality, craftsmanship and experience increasingly influencing perceptions of value alongside affordability.
In Kolkata, the repositioning comes as whisky consumption increasingly spans both traditional and aspirational occasions. The city’s established whisky consumer base and growing premiumisation across urban consumers could provide a relevant market for McDowell’s No.1’s mass-premium positioning, particularly as brands seek to combine accessibility with an upgraded drinking experience.
Ruchira Jaitly, Chief Marketing Officer, Diageo India, said the company validated its consumer insights with more than 10,000 consumers across 11 markets and aims to position the brand for the next generation while retaining its established trust and familiarity.
