Demand for creation of Karbi statehood gains momentum

A joint press conference attended by representatives of several students and civil societies held at the office of ‘Karbi Anglong North Cachar Autonomous State Demand Committee’ Monday pressed for creation of an autonomous state encompassing the three autonomous hill districts of Assam.

The demand for statehood comes close on the heels of the proposed visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah at Den goan of Karbi Anglong district on February 25. One of the members, Sing Timung, while addressing media said: “We heartily welcome the visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah Ji at Den goan of Karbi Anglong on February 25. We like to appeal to him to declare an autonomous state comprising Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao autonomous districts under the readymade provision of Article 244 (A) of Indian constitution.”

Karbi Students’ Association, Dimasa Students Union, Karbi Adorbar, Karbi Riso Adorbar, Karbi So-arlo Amei and Karbi Unemployed Youth Association, while welcoming the visit of Amit Shah, urged the latter to declare Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts as ‘Autonomous State’.

Leaders of KANCA State Demand Committee’, president of Karbi Riso Adorbar, Bimang Kro and others said that some Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao outfits under all probability will lay down arms on the basis of a written accord signed between the ultra organizations and Centre.
