A juvenile has been apprehended following an alleged assault on two individuals from Northeast India near the Saket District Court complex in Delhi. The incident, which occurred on March 8, involved a young woman from Manipur and a transgender person from Assam who were reportedly attacked by a group of men making racially derogatory remarks while they were walking in a park. When the woman objected, the situation escalated, resulting in a physical assault where the victims were punched and beaten with belts, accompanied by abusive slurs and racial epithets.
The Delhi Police have registered a case under relevant laws and are actively working to locate and arrest the remaining suspects, assuring that they are in constant contact with the victims. The police stated, “Delhi Police does not tolerate such incidents. Strict legal action will be taken against those responsible.”
This incident has sparked notable concerns from officials including Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who condemned the recurring violence against Northeastern individuals in mainland India, emphasizing that such racial bullying should not be normalized and that stringent actions must be taken to prevent future incidents.
