An alleged case of illegal coal mining in Meghalaya has once again resulted in the loss of a human life, after a labourer from Assam died while working at an unauthorised coal mine in East Jaintia Hills district. Authorities have sealed the mine and ordered an investigation into the incident.
Police said the deceased has been identified as Mosaid Ali, a 48-year-old resident of Jamuna Moudanga area in Assam’s Hojai district. He was reportedly working at an illegal coal mine located in Umthe village under East Jaintia Hills district when he collapsed at the site on January 14.
According to the Superintendent of Police of East Jaintia Hills, Vikash Kumar, the labourer suddenly fell unconscious while at work. Fellow workers immediately rushed him to the Sutnga community health centre. However, doctors declared him brought dead.
Following the incident, police sealed the mine and initiated a probe to ascertain the exact cause of death and the circumstances under which the illegal mining operation was being carried out. Officials said further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
The case has also drawn the attention of Justice (Retd) B P Katakey, who has been appointed by the Meghalaya High Court to monitor illegal coal mining and transportation in the state. He has reportedly sought a detailed report from the police regarding the incident.
The death has once again highlighted serious concerns over the continued operation of illegal coal mines in Meghalaya, despite a ban on rat-hole mining imposed by the National Green Tribunal several years ago. Environmental activists and social workers have repeatedly pointed out that such mining activities continue in remote areas, often putting the lives of poor labourers at risk.
Social worker Agnes Kharshiing said the incident shows that illegal coal mining and transportation are still widespread in the state. She stressed that stronger enforcement and regular monitoring are needed to prevent further loss of lives.
