After severe cyclonic storm Amphan and Tauktae in the west coast, another cyclone ‘Yass’ is likely to hit the east coast on 26 May morning, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This is the second cyclone to hit India within a period of less than two weeks. Cyclone Tauktae recently caused widespread destruction along the western coastline of India. The increasing presence of cyclones, at least in the Arabian Sea, has been linked directly to global warming by recent studies.
IMD Cyclone Centre Chief RK Jenamani told, “Cyclone Yaas may be a severe or extremely severe category storm. It is likely to take the shape of a low pressure on May 22 and intensify into a cyclonic storm by May 24. Under its impact, coastal Odisha might start to see rain from May 25”.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a high-level meeting on Thursday with senior state officials and officials of disaster management authority to review the preparations after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) alerted that cyclone Yaas may hit West Bengal coast by May 26.
