Cultural sentiments surge as Shillong prepares for S.D. Burman tribute

Shillong’s cultural and events ecosystem is witnessing a positive uptick with the Byatikram Group announcing the second edition of “Remembering the Maestro – S.D. Burman”, scheduled for November 9 at U Soso Tham Auditorium. Organised in association with The Times of India and Rabindranath Tagore Club, Laban, the event is expected to boost regional tourism, hospitality demand, and audience footfall in the city’s cultural market.

The announcement was made at Shillong Press Club in the presence of Dr. Saumen Bharatiya, Patron-in-Chief, Pankaj Deb, and key members of Byatikram Group. A symbolic 69-member chorus by Bahaar Group will honour S.D. Burman’s 69-year musical journey, while Meghalaya Governor Shri Chandrashekhar H. Vijayashankar will attend as chief guest. The “S.D. Burman Memorial Byatikram Lifetime Achievement Award 2025” will be conferred on acclaimed musician Rudy Wallang, succeeding last year’s recipient Zubeen Garg.

Local cultural stakeholders report increased consumer interest in premium live music events, reflecting growing market confidence in Shillong’s entertainment and tourism sectors. Hospitality players anticipate heightened bookings and retail businesses expect additional footfall driven by visiting music enthusiasts. The event is likely to enhance market sentiment and reinforce the city’s creative economy outlook. The open-to-public tribute will feature leading singers and performers, dedicated to the memory of Zubeen Garg, adding emotional value to the cultural market sentiment.
