Crime Branch Registers Complaint After Objectionable Remarks Target Late Singer Zubeen Garg

Garima Saikia Garg, the wife of late Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg, has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against writer Sikha Sarma, accusing her of making derogatory and objectionable remarks on social media. According to sources, Garima Garg approached the Crime Branch on Monday morning to lodge the complaint. The FIR has reportedly been filed over a series of social media posts allegedly made by Sikha Sarma on Facebook, which, as claimed, contained offensive comments targeting the late singer. Sources said the posts not only referred to Zubeen Garg in an objectionable manner but also made remarks questioning his character. The complainant has alleged that the comments were disrespectful to the memory of the late musician and deeply hurt the sentiments of his family, admirers, and the wider public.

Zubeen Garg, who passed away recently, was one of Assam’s most celebrated cultural figures. He enjoyed massive popularity across generations and had a devoted fan following not only in Assam but also in other parts of the country. Following his death, tributes poured in from political leaders, artists, cultural organisations, and thousands of ordinary people who admired his work and personality. Sources close to the matter said that Sikha Sarma had allegedly posted multiple comments over a period of time, despite strong reactions and criticism from social media users. Several users reportedly objected to the language used in the posts and demanded their removal.Garima Garg, in her complaint, is understood to have stated that such comments amount to defamation and are an insult to the dignity of a person who contributed immensely to Assamese music and culture. The FIR reportedly seeks legal action against what has been described as deliberate and repeated attempts to malign the image of the late singer.

Officials of the Crime Branch have not issued a detailed statement yet. However, sources indicated that the matter is being looked into and that the social media posts mentioned in the complaint will be examined as part of the inquiry. No official response from Sikha Sarma was available at the time of filing this report.
