A special meeting regarding the upcoming Assam Assembly elections was held today in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Mallikarjun Kharge, President of the Indian National Congress. The meeting was attended by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Chairperson of the Screening Committee for the Assam elections Priyanka Gandhi, and President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee Gaurav Gogoi.
Also present at the meeting were AICC Organisation General Secretary K. C. Venugopal, AICC General Secretary and Assam in-charge Jitendra Singh, co-incharge Prithviraj Prabhakar, along with Manoj Chauhan, Vikas Upadhyay, senior observers and members of the Central Election Committee. During the meeting, detailed discussions were held on the selection of party candidates for the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections as well as other election-related matters.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Gaurav Gogoi, President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, said that around 95 percent of the Congress candidate list has been finalised. He further stated that the second list of Congress candidates will be released by tomorrow.
On the issue of alliance with Raijor Dal, Gogoi expressed a positive outlook and said, “The alliance has only been paused, not broken.” He also hinted that the alliance could move forward positively. Gogoi added that as discussions over seat-sharing with Raijor Dal had become somewhat heated, a step back was taken to allow time for calm and thoughtful decision-making.
