The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has announced a statewide protest across Assam against the recent increase in LPG cylinder prices. The party said the price rise has put an extra burden on common people and accused the Centre of failing to control the cost of essential items. In a circular issued on March 18, APCC General Secretary Pradyut Bhuyan asked all District Congress Committees to hold peaceful protests on March 19. The demonstrations are planned in busy marketplaces and other public places so that more people can see and join the protest.
The decision comes at a time when many households are already facing pressure due to rising prices of daily-use goods. The Congress said the hike in both domestic and commercial LPG cylinder prices has made the situation worse for families and small businesses. It also raised concern over what it called a shortage of LPG cylinders in several areas. “In light of the severe hardships faced by common people due to the recent LPG price hike and the ongoing shortage, it is necessary to raise a strong and united voice,” the APCC said in its statement.
The protest programme has been organised under the direction of APCC President Gaurav Gogoi. Party workers across districts have been asked to mobilise people and ensure a large turnout. Leaders said the aim is to highlight public difficulties and push the government to take immediate steps to reduce prices. The APCC has also sent protest placards to district units, showing that the campaign is being planned in a coordinated manner across the state.
