Congress in Flux as Bhupen Borah Hints at Exit; CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Meeting Likely Today

Former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Kumar Borah hinted at a definitive exit from the Congress party, announcing a meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Following Borah’s resignation on Monday, he was urged by the Congress high command to reconsider his decision. Borah recounted his long-standing relationship with Sarma, dating back to the early 1990s when they participated in inter-college debates and visited each other’s homes.

Borah criticized the current structure of the APCC, insinuating that it has become more about one leader’s influence rather than collective decision-making concerning leadership positions and candidate selections. He further remarked that while he could continue with the APCC, he could not support its current form, which he referred to as APCC (R).

Sarma extended an invitation to Borah to join the BJP, promising him a secure seat for the upcoming Assembly elections. After his resignation attempt, Borah sought time to reconsider his position as the party’s leadership, including significant figures like Rahul Gandhi, intervened to persuade him to stay.

Jitendra Singh, AICC in-charge for Assam, stated that Congress is a family and aimed to address internal differences. A party delegation sought to convince Borah to reverse his resignation prior to the critical Assembly elections scheduled in less than two months. Borah communicated his need for time to deliberate and wish to discuss the situation with his family before making a final decision.
