Cong-led Opp parties desperate to promote ‘Miya identity’ in Assam: BJP

The BJP today claimed that the opposition parties of Assam, led by the Congress, have come together in a desperate attempt to patronize the Miya community and promote the rise of Miya identity in the state. This comes in the backdrop of open claims by Badruddin Ajmal regarding his eligibility to become the Chief Minister of Assam, the joining of Ajit Bhuyan — who became a Rajya Sabha MP with AIUDF votes — into the Assam Jatiya Parishad, and the controversy over deletion of 11,000 Miya voters from the Sarupathar Assembly constituency.
In a press statement issued today, State BJP spokesperson Jayanta Kumar Goswami said that more than 11,000 Muslims were evicted following the eviction drive carried out at Uriamghat in Sarupathar Assembly constituency of Golaghat district. During the ongoing Special Summary Revision of the voters list, names of around 11,000 persons from the Sarupathar constituency have been deleted.
He stated that in order to prevent deletion of these Miya voters, Akhil Gogoi has resorted to a smear campaign against State BJP president Dilip Saikia. To further fuel this conspiracy and indulge in Miya appeasement, the opposition parties have filed an FIR at Dispur Police Station against the BJP president, thereby exposing their anti-indigenous mindset.
The spokesperson further alleged that by patronizing the proposal of a Miya Museum at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra and with the assistance of suspended Congress MLA Sherman Ali, Akhil Gogoi is attempting to create a new stream of Miya nationalism in Assam. He further claimed that in Miya-dominated areas of Lower Assam, which were previously predominantly Hindu-inhabited regions, efforts are being made — with the support of Sherman Ali — to legitimize Miya migrants as Indian citizens and promote Miya glorification.
Stating that in the upcoming census, Miya Muslims may constitute nearly 40 percent of the total population of the state, the BJP spokesperson strongly criticized such a stand taken by the opposition.
