Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today shared a video on social media of an American astronaut performing Bihu aboard an International Space Station. The video in which Mike Fincke, a US astronaut and Assam’s son-in-law, is seen performing Bihu with a traditional Assamese ‘gamosa’ (scarf) around his neck and a Bihu song playing in the background has gone viral on social media of late. In a post on X, CM Sarma wrote, “Kudos to astronaut Mike Fincke for this special gesture to Assam’s culture. It’s wonderful to see Bihu going global, especially after the special focus given by Adarniya Shri @narendramodi ji during #BihuBinandia.” Sarma captioned his post as “Bihu in an International Space Station.” Fincke, who is married to an Assamese NASA engineer, Renita Saikia, endeared himself to his wife’s native land when he became the first man to do the Bihu in space an event witnessed by thousands of people around the world through streaming video.
