Child rights are human rights, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma declares on World Children’s Day

On World Children’s Day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reaffirmed the state’s unwavering commitment to creating a secure and nurturing environment for children. “We are dedicated to providing a safe and enabling atmosphere where children can flourish and achieve their full potential,” Sarma stated, emphasizing the government’s focus on child welfare. Observed globally by UNICEF, World Children’s Day commemorates the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, underscoring the universal and non-negotiable nature of children’s rights. CM Sarma highlighted this crucial point, asserting, “Child rights are human rights. They are non-negotiable and universal.”

Under the leadership of CM Sarma, the Assam government has implemented a series of policies aimed at enhancing the lives of children in the state. These initiatives span various sectors, including education, healthcare, and child protection. Efforts such as the improvement of schools, child care facilities, and playgrounds aim to create a holistic development environment for children. A significant initiative is the state’s battle against child marriage, led by the “Nijut Moina Asoni” campaign, which works to protect underage children from early marriages. Additionally, the introduction of the Banikanta Kakati Award, which provides two-wheelers to exceptional students, encourages academic excellence.

The Assam Police’s “Shishu Mitra Programme” also plays a crucial role in raising awareness about child safety and rights. These measures reflect the state’s commitment to safeguarding its younger population.
