Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday spoke with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to review the worsening flood situation in the state and assured all possible assistance from the Centre for relief, rehabilitation and rebuilding efforts.
During the telephone conversation, the Prime Minister sought a detailed assessment of the flood situation, including the extent of damage caused by the disaster, the progress of relief operations and the challenges being faced by the state administration in reaching affected areas.
Sharing details of the conversation on social media, Chief Minister Sarma said he briefed the Prime Minister on the measures being taken by the Assam government to deal with the flood crisis. He informed the Prime Minister about the ongoing rescue and relief operations, the steps being taken to ensure assistance reaches every affected family, and the state’s efforts to support people displaced by the floods.
According to the Chief Minister, Prime Minister Modi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and widespread damage to property caused by the floods. He assured that the Union Government was treating the situation with the highest priority and would extend every possible support to Assam in its relief and rehabilitation efforts.
“The Hon’ble Prime Minister expressed deep condolences over the loss of lives and property. He assured that the Government of India stands firmly with the people of Assam and will provide every possible assistance for relief, rehabilitation and rebuilding,” Sarma said.
Assam has been witnessing severe flooding in several districts, with thousands of people affected and large areas remaining under water. State government agencies, along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and district administrations, have been carrying out rescue operations, distributing relief materials and shifting people to safer locations.
