CBI Court in Assam Convicts Army Personnel in Job Fraud Case, Awards Three-Year Jail Term

A CBI court in Assam has found Army personnel Vijay Kumar Gupta guilty of job fraud, sentencing him to three years in prison and imposing a fine of Rs 10,000. This decision stemmed from a case of corruption and cheating involving the misuse of Gupta’s official position. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) initiated the case on May 15, 2019, following a complaint from a Brigadier.

The complaint detailed that during his tenure as a Sepoy (MT) at the 556 Army Service Corps (ASC) Battalion in Arunachal Pradesh from 2011 to 2018, Gupta deceived a woman out of Rs 1.50 lakh by falsely promising to obtain a government job for her son. Following a thorough investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet on December 31, 2019, naming Gupta and another individual, SK Pandey, a Naik. While the court framed charges against both defendants on March 31, 2022, it ultimately acquitted SK Pandey and convicted Gupta after trial proceedings.
