The Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) paused today to honor the enduring legacy of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma, celebrating his 70th birth anniversary as Student’s Day. Observed with a blend of solemnity and aspiration, the day served as a powerful reminder of Brahma’s vision for education, social reform, and the progress of the Bodo community.
The focal point of the commemorations was Thulungapuri, the burial site of the iconic leader. In a central program organized by the Upendra Nath Brahma Trust and the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), a diverse gathering of students, community leaders, and admirers converged to offer floral tributes. The atmosphere was one of profound respect as attendees reflected on the man often called the “Father of the Bodos.”
Addressing the assembly, speakers highlighted Bodofa’s relentless pursuit of a peaceful and educated society. ABSU President Khwrwmdao Wary, alongside Upendra Nath Brahma Trust Chairman Dwibrang Mushahary and UPPL General Secretary Raju Kumar Narzary, emphasized that Brahma’s ideals remain the North Star for the region’s youth. They urged the student community to view education not merely as a career path but as a tool for social upliftment and regional unity.
“Bodofa believed that education is the primary engine of change,” remarked one of the speakers. “Today is not just about remembrance; it is about rededicating ourselves to his dream of a developed and self-reliant society.”
The significance of the day was further institutionalized by the government of Assam, which officially designated March 31 as Student’s Day in 2023. This recognition underscores Brahma’s lifelong dedication to student welfare and his pivotal role in the socio-political awakening of the Bodo people.
Simultaneously, the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) administration held a commemorative event at the BTC Secretariat. Officials and staff paid their respects, using the platform to reiterate their commitment to strengthening the educational infrastructure within the BTR.
As the sun set over Thulungapuri, the message of the day was clear: while Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma may no longer be present, his philosophy of “Live and Let Live” and his emphasis on “Education First” continue to ignite the hearts of thousands across Assam.
