Indian boxer and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Lovlina Borgohain has described her recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a memorable experience, saying his personal interaction with athletes and continued encouragement have given Indian sportspersons a strong sense of support.
Borgohain, who won the silver medal in the women’s 75 kg boxing event at the Commonwealth Games, said she was impressed by the way the Prime Minister interacts with athletes and takes an interest in their performances and experiences.
“The way he motivates and supports us is incredible,” Borgohain said while recalling her meeting with Modi.
She said athletes in earlier generations may not have imagined getting an opportunity to meet the Prime Minister personally. Borgohain added that she felt fortunate to be among the athletes who have had such an opportunity.
According to the boxer, Modi regularly speaks to sportspersons after competitions and interacts with them in a personal manner. She said such conversations make athletes feel that their efforts are being recognised beyond their performances on the field.
Borgohain also recalled that the Prime Minister praised her for the way she handled issues related to the Glasgow map and a restaurant situation. She said the appreciation was particularly meaningful because it came directly from the country’s Prime Minister.
“It feels wonderful because when the country’s Prime Minister speaks highly of you, it’s a unique and amazing feeling,” she said.
The conversation also touched on Indian boxing and the country’s performance at the Commonwealth Games. Borgohain said Indian boxers delivered a strong performance at the Games and played an important role in the country’s overall showing.
“Our boxers performed exceptionally well this time. We really changed the game at the Commonwealth Games,” she said.
Borgohain said Modi also spoke about the development of boxing in India and its future prospects. The discussion included the possibility of Indian boxers winning more medals at future Olympic Games.
