Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday expressed strong confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will secure a decisive victory in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, saying the party is set for a “historic result”. Speaking to reporters, Sarma said the response to the BJP’s campaign activities has been very positive. Referring to the party’s outreach programme, he said the “Vijay Sankalp Yatra” received wide public support across the state. “A large number of people came forward and blessed us. We are confident that this support will reflect in the election results,” he said. The Chief Minister also launched sharp criticism against opposition parties, especially Badruddin Ajmal of the All India United Democratic Front. In a strong remark, Sarma claimed that the BJP has “completely destroyed the power of the enemies of Assam” and added that further political gains would follow in the coming days.
A day earlier, Sarma had said that Assam has seen major changes under BJP rule. He stated that people across different communities are supporting the party and that the state is moving forward with a renewed focus on its culture and heritage. He also made pointed remarks against the opposition, including the Indian National Congress, claiming that the party no longer has the strength to return to power in the state. According to him, public support is firmly with the BJP. The comments come at a time when political campaigning is picking up pace ahead of the Assembly elections. The BJP-led alliance is aiming to return to power for a third consecutive term, while the Congress is trying to regain its footing after years in opposition.
Sarma, who will contest from the Jalukbari constituency, is leading the BJP’s campaign in the state. Political observers say the coming days are likely to see more intense campaigning from all sides as parties try to reach out to voters. Polling for all 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam is scheduled for April 9, as announced by the Election Commission of India. The counting of votes will take place on May 4.
