The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its first list of 88 candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, concluding speculation around ticket distribution. Among the candidates are two former Congress members, Pradyut Bordoloi and Bhupen Kumar Borah. The incumbent Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will contest from Jalukbari, joined by other notable candidates such as Ranjeet Kumar Dass (Bhowanipur-Sorbhog) and Jayanta Malla Baruah (Nalbari). Women candidates are also represented with six selections, including Madhavi Das (Birsing-Jarua) and Ajanta Neog (Golaghat). The list was overseen by the BJP’s Central Election Committee, led by party president Nitin Nabin and attended by senior leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a significant shift, 15 sitting MLAs, such as Siddhartha Bhattacharya and Atul Bora, have been omitted from the candidate list, indicating both continuity and change in the BJP’s election strategy as preparations for the polls intensify.
