Bhuyan to Preside Over Exclusive Fast-Track Court in Zubeen Death Case

Sharmila Bhuyan, currently a District Judge in Baksa, has been appointed by the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court to lead a fast-track sessions court for the Zubeen Garg death case. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this significant step, stating it marks a milestone in the pursuit of justice for the late singer, Zubeen Garg. Sarma emphasized that this move will expedite judicial proceedings and expressed gratitude to Justice Ashutosh Kumar for his support in this initiative. The Assam Cabinet had previously approved the formation of this dedicated Sessions Court on February 27, 2023, under Section 346(1) BNSS, in light of the case’s sensitivity and its impact on public order and governance. The Chief Minister highlighted that the request for the exclusive court was made with the intent to ensure timely justice, with further steps to be determined by the High Court.
