Bharatiya Janata Party Defends Eviction Drives, Accuses Indian National Congress of Misleading Voters Ahead of 2026 Polls

The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday hit back strongly at the opposition after the Indian National Congress released its “Charge Sheet-2026” against the state government. The ruling party rejected the allegations and challenged senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to visit Assam and see what it called the “ground reality”.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on February 20, BJP spokesperson Jayanta Kumar Goswami said the Congress document was politically motivated and far from the truth. He said the party was trying to mislead people ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Goswami invited Priyanka Gandhi to personally visit tea garden areas across the state. He said she should walk through tea garden labour lines, visit schools, Anganwadi centres and hospitals, and speak directly with workers and their families. According to him, such a visit would show the changes brought under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The BJP leader dismissed the “Charge Sheet-2026” as baseless. He said the allegations did not reflect the real situation in Assam. He also accused the Congress of being disconnected from the people of the state.

On the issue of eviction drives, Goswami defended the government’s actions. He said the eviction operations were carried out to remove illegal encroachments from forest land, VGR and PGR land, Tribal Belts and Blocks, and other government properties. He rejected the Congress claim that indigenous communities were being displaced for corporate interests. He described the allegation as false and misleading. Goswami further criticised the Congress for what he described as long neglect of tea workers during its years in power. He said previous governments failed to grant land rights to tea garden workers. In contrast, he claimed that the present government has issued land pattas to many families to ensure ownership security.
