Balipara Foundation Awards 2025 Celebrate Kaziranga’s ‘Van Durgas’ for Their Frontline Conservation Work

Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve stands strong because of the unwavering dedication of its frontline staff. Among them shines a remarkable group of women known as the Van Durgas — fearless forest frontliners recognised by the Hon’ble Prime Minister for their exceptional service to nature. With a force of around 108 women, these frontline heroes work as foresters and forest guards, forming the backbone of Kaziranga’s protection system.

Their days begin with anti-poaching patrols and end with addressing human–wildlife conflict, eco-development work, and community engagement. Their courage reflects not only professional discipline but also a deep love for the wilderness they protect.

This commitment was celebrated at the 13th Balipara Foundation Awards 2025 at Vivanta, Guwahati. The evening honoured the resilience and dedication of Assam’s frontline forest staff. Four extraordinary Van Durgas from Kaziranga’s King Cobra Camp — Lokhimoni Dutta, Jitamoni Kakoti, Pompy Bora, and Priyanka Pegu — were presented with the Forest Ranger & Guard Award 2025 by acclaimed actor and filmmaker Aimee Baruah.

Each awardee brings her own story of courage:

1.Lokhimoni Dutta of Dibrugarh, known for her strong sense of duty.

2. Jitamoni Kakoti of Morigaon, driven by determination and youthful zeal.

3. Pompy Bora of Jorhat, motivated by her long-standing passion to protect Kaziranga.

4. Priyanka Pegu of Dergaon, admired for her dedication and efficient work.

These women embody empowerment, inclusivity, and hope for future conservation efforts. Their achievements reflect a broader shift — one where women are increasingly at the forefront of environmental protection.

By honouring these unsung heroes, the Balipara Foundation continues its vision of community-led conservation rooted in empathy, innovation, and equal opportunity. The Van Durgas’ courage reminds us that the future of wildlife protection lies in unity, diversity, and shared responsibility.
