Marking the International Day of Forests, Axis Bank has intensified its environmental sustainability push by supporting the plantation of over 15.19 lakh native saplings across 969 hectares in Assam and West Bengal. The initiative targets ecologically sensitive regions, aiming to restore degraded landscapes, enhance biodiversity, and strengthen climate resilience. In Assam, the bank is focusing on the Kartick Chapori landscape in Majuli district, a fragile river island ecosystem. Implemented with the Balipara Tract & Frontier Foundation, the project spans two phases and aims to restore over 785 hectares of degraded forest along with 65 hectares under agroforestry. The programme integrates biodiversity assessments, soil analysis, and community-led nursery development while promoting sustainable livelihoods.
In West Bengal, Axis Bank is supporting mangrove restoration in the Sundarbans in partnership with the Nature Environment & Wildlife Society. The initiative includes plantation of over 7.14 lakh mangrove saplings across 119 hectares, along with wetland restoration, revival of water bodies, and strengthening of coastal protection systems such as sand dunes. Axis Bank Group Executive Vijay Mulbagal said the initiative combines ecological responsibility with community development, aiming to generate long-term environmental and social value.
The initiative reinforces Kolkata’s growing role as a hub for sustainability-linked corporate investments, particularly in climate-resilient infrastructure and ecosystem restoration. With increasing focus on ESG-driven projects, such large-scale interventions are expected to boost green partnerships, support local livelihoods in the Sundarbans region, and strengthen eastern India’s environmental economy.
