Study Traces How Kaziranga Became the Final Stronghold of the One-Horned Rhino

Study Traces How Kaziranga Became the Final Stronghold of the One-Horned Rhino

From the wetlands of Assam’s Kaziranga National Park (KNP) emerges an ecological narrative regarding the evolution of the one-horned rhinoceros, influenced by climate change, vegetation shifts, invasive species, and herbivore activity. Factors such as rapid urbanization, industrialization, deforestation, and natural disasters contribute to global ecological degradation, particularly impacting biodiversity in Northeast India—a critical region within the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot known for its endangered species. Scientists from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences utilized pollen from sediment cores extracted from KNP’s Sohola swamp to uncover long-term palaeoecological records related to palaeoherbivory. Their research, published in the journal 'Catena,' reveals a stark…

Machine Learning Drives New IIT Guwahati–UK Framework for CRM-Free Metal Alloys

Machine Learning Drives New IIT Guwahati–UK Framework for CRM-Free Metal Alloys

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, collaborating with various universities, have developed a machine learning-based approach for creating advanced metal alloys that exclude Critical Raw Materials (CRMs). This method is aimed at identifying sustainable, high-performance alloys less reliant on fragile supply chains. High-Entropy Alloys (HEAs), which balance multiple metals in their composition, have emerged as promising alternatives to traditional alloys, often used in critical industries like aerospace and nuclear power. However, many HEAs utilize CRMs, which present challenges due to their limited availability and environmental impact. To tackle this issue, the team formulated a machine learning-assisted framework that…
