Union Home Minister Amit Shah will be visiting Assam by Thursday. As per sources, Amit Shah will be here to distribute appointment letters to youth recruited in various government departments. The programme for distribution of appointment letters will take place in Veterinary College Field in Guwahati's Khanapara area where 44,703 will be receiving appointment letters. Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) is activated in Assam. AFSPA is specially imposed for disturbed areas in state with powers like search, arrest and to open fire if they deem it necessary, without a magistrate’s permission, for “the maintenance of public order.” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently announced to uplift this special power from the districts of Assam by November, 2023. Six ethnic communities from Assam were demanding ST status since few months in the state. The communities were the tea tribes, Chutia, Koch-Rajbongshi, Matak, Moran, and Tai-Ahom. There were several protests by the community in the state but the grant for the status got delayed. The six ethnic groups are currently identified as OBCs in the state.
