Assam vigilance nabs Bongaigaon BDO and assistant in bribery sting

The Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam, arrested two public servants in Bongaigaon district on Friday for their involvement in a bribery scandal. The arrests followed a well-coordinated operation by the Anti-Corruption cell, prompted by a complaint that exposed the corrupt practices of the officials. The complaint detailed how Khurseeda Khanam, Block Development Officer (BDO) of Srijangram Development Block, and her assistant, Nekib Ahmed, demanded a bribe of Rs. 36,000 for processing routine payments.

The complainant, unwilling to comply with the corrupt demands, approached the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption to expose the malpractices. Acting swiftly, the Directorate set up a trap at the BDO’s office. During the operation, Nekib Ahmed was caught red-handed accepting Rs. 16,000 from the complainant. The amount was part of the total bribe demanded. The tainted money was recovered from Ahmed’s possession, with independent observers present to ensure the legality and transparency of the proceedings.

Further investigation revealed that Khurseeda Khanam was not merely an accomplice but a central figure in the bribery scheme. She was arrested during the same operation for her role in soliciting and accepting the bribe through her assistant. Both officials now face severe legal repercussions, highlighting the ongoing battle against corruption in public offices.
