Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 4 said that a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in the state will be carried out in a very detailed and proper manner after the Assembly elections are completed. He said the proposed exercise will be much more extensive than the revision process that is currently going on in the state. The Chief Minister made the statement while speaking to reporters after attending an official programme at Sonari. He said that at present, Assam is undergoing a Special Revision of the electoral rolls, but this should not be confused with a full-fledged SIR. According to him, the larger and more detailed revision will be taken up once the election process is over.
“Here, the SIR will be very extensive and properly done. I had requested the Election Commission to do the SIR even now, but they conducted the Special Revision due to the non-publication of the NRC. We welcome the SIR,” Sarma said. The Chief Minister’s comments come at a time when the issue of the National Register of Citizens continues to remain unresolved. The final NRC, which was published on August 31, 2019, excluded 19,06,657 people, while 3,11,21,004 names were included out of a total of 3,30,27,661 applicants. However, the NRC has still not been officially notified by the Registrar General of India.Sarma said this pending status of the NRC played an important role in the decision of the Election Commission of India to go ahead with a Special Revision instead of a Special Intensive Revision at this stage.
As per official figures, the draft electoral roll prepared after the ongoing Special Revision shows a total of 2,52,01,624 electors in Assam. This is an increase of 1.35 per cent compared to the final roll published in January 2025. Between January 6 and December 27 last year, the rolls recorded 7,86,841 new additions and 4,47,196 deletions.During the verification process, officials identified 4,78,992 deceased voters, 5,23,680 voters who had shifted their residence, and 53,619 cases of duplicate entries. However, the Election Commission has clarified that these names have not yet been removed. Any deletion or correction will be done only after proper applications are submitted during the claims and objections period. The final electoral roll for Assam is scheduled to be published on February 10, 2026, ahead of the Assam Legislative Assembly elections.
