Assam Rifles draws flak for action against Kuki village volunteers

The Eastern Kuki Chiefs’ Association (EKCA) has condemned the action taken by the Assam Rifles troops against its volunteers near Molvailup in Kamjong district of Manipur on June 19. The association said the volunteers were patrolling Kuki villages to protect local residents.
In the press statement, EKCA alleged that security forces targeted the volunteers instead of acting against those responsible for recent incidents of violence. It also raised concerns over the security response to the reported burning of houses at Lanchah and Kultuh villages, alleged restrictions on the movement of essential supplies to Kuki civilians, and the killing of two civilians.
The association further alleged that Myanmar-based militants and Tangkhul militants have been operating in parts of Kamjong district and questioned the lack of action against alleged cross-border militant activities.
EKCA has called on the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into what it described as partial treatment by security forces, alleged cross-border militant operations, and the humanitarian situation affecting the Kuki population.
However, there has been no official response from the security forces or the government on the allegations so far.
