The flood situation in Assam has turned increasingly grim, with three more lives claimed in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of flood-related deaths this year to 20. The latest bulletin from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) paints a distressing picture as tens of thousands grapple with displacement, loss of livelihoods, and destruction of property.Despite the fact that no rivers are currently flowing above the danger level, the widespread impact of the deluge continues to disrupt normal life across several districts. As per official data, the floods have ravaged 11 districts including Hailakandi, Sribhumi, Morigaon, Kamrup, Goalpara, Cachar, Nagaon, Kamrup (Metro), Darrang, Lakhimpur, and Golaghat. A total of 32 revenue circles and 741 villages have been submerged, underscoring the vast scale of the calamity.
Over 6,300 hectares of cropland have been swallowed by floodwaters, delivering a severe blow to the already struggling agrarian economy. Farmers across the state are facing crop loss, livestock deaths, and damage to essential infrastructure. More than 1.44 lakh animals have also been affected, further intensifying the crisis in the rural belt. In response to the unfolding emergency, the state government has ramped up relief operations. Authorities have established 100 relief camps and 30 distribution centres to shelter and feed those forced to leave their homes. At present, 24,908 people have taken refuge in these camps, where they are being provided with food, drinking water, and basic medical care.
The administration has assured that all possible efforts are being made to support the affected families. Local officials, disaster response teams, and volunteers are working round the clock to deliver relief materials, repair embankments, and evacuate stranded residents.
