In a setback for the BJP before the Assam Assembly elections, minister Nandita Gorlosa has joined the Congress, planning to contest from the Haflong constituency in Dima Hasao hill district. Her switch was facilitated by the voluntary withdrawal of Congress candidate Nirmal Langthasa. The BJP has nominated Rupali Langthasa for the same seat. The Congress praised Gorlosa’s contributions to Dima Hasao and criticized Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma for prioritizing corporate interests over tribal rights. Gorlosa, who became an MLA in 2021 and previously held positions as Power Minister and in Sports and Youth Welfare, joined the Congress with Langthasa present. Tensions within the BJP’s Dima Hasao unit were exacerbated by the nomination of Rupali Langthasa, leading to divisions within the party as observers noted a growing rift between Nandita and Debolal Gorlosa. The Chief Minister’s visit to Haflong is seen as an attempt to manage these internal conflicts and restore party unity ahead of the elections, as the situation remains sensitive.
