Three people were detained on charges of killing two wild elephants in separate occasions in the Kulsi and Singra forest ranges of the Kamrup (West) forest divisions. The instances occurred in paddy fields, where wild elephants had ventured out in quest of food. The forest department officials stated that both elephant deaths were due to electrocution.
One of the cases occurred in the Dhangargaon village of the Kulsi range, where forest department officials apprehended one Bhagirath Rabha. The case was filed under Section 9/39(1)/57 of the Wildlife Act of 1972. Electric wires from the incident were also found. During the questioning, the culprit admitted to electrifying the paddy field. He was then presented in front of the CJM Kamup district.
The second incidence occurred in Boko, where forest department officials detained Ramakanta Boro of Dangpur village and Akuk Rabha of Jarapara village, both of which are located within the Singra Range. The accused was charged under Sections 9, 39, 57, and 51 of the Wildlife Act of 1972, as well as Section 25 of the Assam Forest Regulation Act of 1891.
