In a major move to reinforce discipline within the Assam Police, authorities have taken strict action against four police personnel involved in two separate incidents of alleged misconduct. Three staff posted at the Jalukbari police checkpost in Guwahati were suspended on Sunday following serious accusations of extorting money from livestock transporters, while a sub-inspector from Gohpur faces suspension for alleged custodial brutality. Those suspended from the Jalukbari post include Constable Shashi Sinha, Home Guard jawan Dharmeshwar Rajbanshi, and vehicle driver Dulal Das. The trio were accused of extorting money from vehicles carrying cattle and buffaloes. The matter came to light after local media reports highlighted the ongoing malpractice at the checkpost, prompting immediate departmental action.
Senior police officials confirmed the suspensions and said that the decision was taken in line with the state government’s strict stance against corruption. “There will be zero tolerance for any unethical behavior within the police force,” said a senior officer, adding that an internal probe has been launched to investigate the incident in detail. The Jalukbari checkpost, being a major gateway in and out of Guwahati, has often seen a high volume of transport traffic, including livestock carriers. The allegations have raised concerns among traders and residents alike, many of whom have welcomed the crackdown as a step toward restoring faith in law enforcement.
In a separate but equally alarming case, Sub-Inspector Haidar Hussain of Gohpur Police Station in Sonitpur district was placed under reserve after allegations of brutal custodial assault surfaced. The officer is accused of torturing a young man inside a police station restroom. According to reports, the victim was physically assaulted while in custody, sparking public outrage and concern over custodial safety and human rights. Taking swift action, Sonitpur Superintendent of Police Subhasish Baruah suspended the officer and appointed Gohpur Circle Officer Pranjit Lahkar to carry out a detailed inquiry into the incident. “The matter is being taken very seriously. No one is above the law, and any misuse of power will be dealt with firmly,” said SP Baruah.
