On Saturday, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) (IGP L&O) Bhuyan updated the number of persons arrested in connection with the crime since yesterday morning till today morning.
Bhuiyan said, “The statistics of arrests in child marriage cases have increased. As of this morning, the police have arrested 2,170 people across the state and it will increase.”
On Friday morning 1,800 people were arrested linked to the crime. Today, eventually the number of cases has risen to 2,170 across the state.
The newly designated Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh addressing the cases said among the arrested individuals 52 were priests and Qazis involved in child marriages.
According to the report, the maximum numbers of people have been arrested from Dhubri, Barpeta, Kokrajhar and Vishwanath districts.
The DGP also informed that most of the cases have been registered under various provisions of POCSO Act and IPC sections and action will be taken as per law.
