Assam Medical College & Hospital makes breakthrough in minimal-access open-heart surgery

By successfully completing a challenging open-heart procedure using minimal-access cardiac surgical techniques, Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH) has made a major medical advancement that ushers in a new era of advanced cardiac treatment in Upper Assam. An atrial septal defect (ASD), a congenital cardiac abnormality, was repaired during the treatment by a multidisciplinary team under the direction of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS). With the help of the state-of-the-art facilities in the Superspeciality Block, surgeons employed extremely sophisticated techniques, such as cold blood cardioplegia.

The patient was stable and being closely monitored after surgery, according to hospital officials. Dr. Sanjeev Kakoti, AMCH Principal and Chief Superintendent, praised the team’s outstanding cooperation and commitment. He praised the CTVS surgeons, anesthesiology unit, perfusionists, technical team, and nursing staff for precisely performing a complicated, high-risk cardiac operation. The success of this technique, according to Dr. Kakoti, showed AMCH’s growing capacity to do complex cardiac procedures on a regular basis.

Such accomplishments, he continued, would greatly lessen the need for Upper Assamese patients to travel outside the state for specialized cardiac care. In order to further improve healthcare delivery, the CTVS Department and its supporting teams will also be crucial to the impending second phase of the mega health camp. The cooperation that resulted in this medical achievement has been acknowledged by the hospital administration and other health groups.
