Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate from the Guwahati Central constituency, Kunki Chowdhury, appeared before the police at Panbazar Police Station today after being summoned in connection with an election-related case. Chowdhury reached the police station in the morning after receiving a notice directing her to appear by 11 am, with a warning that non-compliance could lead to her arrest. She was questioned for around two hours before she was allowed to leave. Speaking to the media after the interrogation, Chowdhury denied all allegations against her. She claimed that the charges leveled against her were false and questioned why no action had been taken on a complaint she had earlier filed with the Crime Branch.
The case was registered on April 9, the day of polling, following a complaint lodged by a BJP worker. The complaint alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and accused Chowdhury of disrupting the electoral process. Her election agent, Sandeep Yadav, has also been named in the FIR. Chowdhury’s lawyer, Santanu Borthakur, stated that the charges mentioned in the FIR are bailable and not serious in nature. He alleged that the notice and case were intended to harass the candidate and raised questions about the timing and wording of the police summons.
