Assam invests ₹100 crore to preserve Assamese culture

In a significant push for cultural preservation and academic excellence, the Assam government has allocated ₹100 crore to Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra under the Assam Budget 2025. This one-time grant aims to enhance advanced research, modern preservation techniques, and documentation of Assam’s rich cultural heritage. The move aligns with the government’s commitment to fully implementing Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, ensuring the protection and promotion of Assamese identity.

In a parallel effort to boost media education, the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Regional Government Film and Television Institute will be upgraded to a degree-level institution from its current diploma-level status. This transformation, expected to be completed within a year, will elevate academic standards in film and media studies, providing aspiring filmmakers and media professionals with advanced educational opportunities. The budget also honors literary icon Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaruah, with plans to construct multipurpose cultural complexes across all district headquarters. These centers will feature auditoriums dedicated to showcasing his life and contributions. A total of ₹1,240 crore has been earmarked for 12 districts, forming part of the larger ₹1,700 crore allocation covering all 35 districts of Assam.

Further strengthening cultural infrastructure, the government has announced the development of Multipurpose Cultural Complexes for Indigenous People. These centers will serve as dedicated spaces for Assam’s tribal and ethnic communities, preserving their unique traditions and heritage. Each complex will receive ₹75 crore, with 20 such facilities planned for 2025-26.
