Assam Govt Partners Hans Foundation to Discover Musical Talent in Tea Garden Schools

As part of its initiative to enhance holistic education among tea garden communities, The Hans Foundation, in collaboration with the Department of Secondary Education, Government of Assam, has launched a large-scale music talent hunt and mentorship program across 54 Model Schools in the tea gardens of Sonitpur, Tinsukia, and Dibrugarh districts. This effort is part of the Uttam Xikhya programme, which aims to improve educational access and quality for tea tribe children, with plans to expand from 54 to 101 schools by April 2025. During a review meeting, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the introduction of structured co-curricular activities, particularly music education, to foster the overall development of students. Acting on this guidance, The Hans Foundation has implemented formal music education in all Model Schools, employing dedicated music teachers. Over 14,000 students from tea tribes have participated in weekly music classes.

To further cultivate musical talent, a statewide music competition is being organized, including auditions over the next month in the participating schools and district-level selections. A pre-state competition will take place in Dibrugarh on January 21, leading to the selection of 15 finalists for mentorship sessions in Guwahati, culminating in a grand finale on February 6, where the top five will be announced. Jurismita Puzari, Program Manager at The Hans Foundation, highlighted the importance of music as a means of self-expression and empowerment for marginalized children. The initiative aims to provide educational scholarships, a visit to Suresh Wadkar’s music institute in Mumbai, and recognition for the winners. Smt. Mamta Hojai, Director of Secondary Education, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to holistic development through co-curricular activities, noting the successful collaboration with The Hans Foundation in improving educational outcomes for tea garden communities. This initiative aims to showcase and nurture the talents of tea tribe children, promoting arts education as a vital part of their growth and future opportunities.
