Over the past decade, Assam’s railway network has undergone a remarkable transformation, emerging as a key driver of infrastructure-led growth in eastern and North-Eastern India. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Indian Railways has shifted from ageing and uneven connectivity to a future-ready, integrated system.
At the heart of this change is the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, the world’s largest railway station redevelopment programme. More than 1,300 stations across India are being modernised under the scheme, with redevelopments going beyond cosmetic upgrades to include modern passenger amenities, Divyangjan-friendly facilities, digital information systems, and architecture inspired by local heritage.
Assam, as India’s gateway to the North-East, has emerged as the biggest beneficiary in the region. Out of 60 stations selected across the Northeast, 50 are in Assam, with a total investment of ₹2,101 crore. Key stations under redevelopment include Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Lumding, Tinsukia, New Bongaigaon, Jorhat Town, Kokrajhar, Rangiya, and Diphu.
Haibargaon station, inaugurated in May 2025 by the Prime Minister, became Assam’s first completed Amrit Bharat station, setting new benchmarks in passenger amenities and design. Redevelopments include upgraded platforms, modern station buildings, improved circulation, digital signage, and AI-enabled security systems, including over 1,000 CCTV cameras and intrusion detection for elephant corridors. Facilities such as 24 lifts, 21 escalators, and Wi-Fi at 218 stations have further enhanced passenger convenience.
Officials say the scheme is transforming stations into vibrant public spaces and economic enablers, stimulating regional commerce while ensuring accessibility for all. Experts note that these stations are no longer just transit points—they are becoming centres of connectivity, commerce, and cultural identity, strengthening regional growth and national integration.
With the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, Assam is set to lead the North-East into a new era of modern infrastructure, positioning Indian Railways as a key pillar in India’s long-term development story.
