Assam Emerges as Global Hub of Muga Silk, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Says Sericulture Sector Boosts Rural Livelihoods

Assam accounts for 90 per cent of India’s total Muga silk production and 65 per cent of its Eri silk output, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. In a post shared on X, the Chief Minister stated that with 90 per cent of the country’s Muga production, Assam stands as the global home of the iconic silk variety. He said the State’s Muga and Eri industries not only reflect Assam’s rich cultural identity but also support thousands of families across rural and semi-urban areas.

Sarma said the sericulture sector remains a strong pillar of what he described as “Atmanirbhar Assam.” He noted that the silk industry powers livelihoods and contributes significantly to the rural economy. According to him, the State government has taken several steps to strengthen the sector, improve production, and support weavers and farmers engaged in silk cultivation.

Muga silk, known for its natural golden colour and long-lasting quality, is unique to Assam and carries a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Eri silk, often called ‘peace silk’ because it is produced without killing the silkworm, is also widely manufactured in the State. Both varieties form an important part of Assam’s traditional handloom industry.
