Amid concerns over a potential LPG shortage, the Assam government has directed all District Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) to stay alert and prevent the diversion of domestic LPG cylinders for commercial use, and to combat hoarding, black marketing, and other unfair trade practices. This directive came during a video conference led by Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota, aimed at reviewing the state’s LPG supply and ensuring precautionary measures to avert disruptions and public inconvenience. The State Level coordinator for LPG in Assam reported that there is currently no shortage of LPG; however, in light of ongoing geopolitical tensions, precautionary actions were recommended. DCs and SSPs are tasked with coordinating with Oil Marketing Companies, monitoring stock levels, and conducting public awareness campaigns to avert panic and misinformation, ensuring a stable supply without inconveniencing the public. Dr. Kota emphasized that district authorities should refrain from issuing independent instructions to LPG dealers about stock management, directing them instead to refer urgent issues to the State Level Committee established for this purpose. Furthermore, two committees, including a Media Management Committee, have been set up at the state level, with a suggestion for districts to create similar locally coordinated efforts.
