Assam Cyclist Completes Solo, Self-Supported Expedition Across Nepal’s Annapurna Circuit

Assam-based adventure cyclist, astrophotographer and filmmaker Dipankar — popularly known as Stephen — has completed a solo, self-supported bicycle expedition across Nepal’s Annapurna Circuit, one of the world’s most challenging high-altitude mountain routes.

Riding entirely under his own power and carrying all essential gear, Stephen successfully crossed the iconic Thorong La Pass at 5,416 metres, a feat achieved by very few Indian cyclists. He is believed to be the first cyclist from Northeast India to complete the Annapurna Circuit in a fully self-supported solo format.

The Annapurna Circuit is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes as well as its extreme conditions, including thin air, sub-zero temperatures, steep ascents, rugged terrain, and rapidly changing weather. Completing the route by bicycle demands exceptional physical endurance and mental resilience, while undertaking it alone without support vehicles, guides, or logistical assistance significantly increases the challenge.

Stephen began his journey from Assam, transporting his own camping equipment, food supplies, repair tools, and filming gear. After reaching Kathmandu, he officially started riding the Annapurna Circuit on November 18. His route took him through remote Himalayan villages, high mountain passes, and isolated stretches where assistance is limited and weather conditions can deteriorate quickly.

Reaching Thorong La Pass with a fully loaded bicycle was one of the most demanding moments of the expedition. At the summit, Stephen paid tribute to legendary Assamese musician Zubeen Garg by placing a traditional gamosa in his memory.

“This journey wasn’t about speed or records,” Stephen said. “It was about commitment — showing up every day, pushing through uncertainty, and trusting both the mountains and myself. There were moments of exhaustion, struggle, and extreme cold, but also moments of deep silence and clarity that only the Himalayas can give.”

At a time when many high-altitude expeditions rely on extensive logistical support, Stephen’s ride stood out for its minimalist approach, powered solely by personal endurance and determination.

He also acknowledged the support of his sponsor, Maureen, and thanked friends and well-wishers who encouraged him throughout the journey.
