Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma gave a preview of the new terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to Assam starting on December 20. He described the project as a game-changer for the state’s aviation industry. The Chief Minister shared pictures of the almost finished terminal on the social media site X, which prompted a lot of responses from the people. The building was hailed by many as both aesthetically arresting and a representation of Assam’s growing infrastructure.
Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to officially open the new terminal on December 20. It is reported to have cost Rs 4,000 crore. Bamboo architecture, foxtail orchid patterns, and a Gamosa-inspired theme are important characteristics of the terminal, which was designed with a heavy focus on Assam’s cultural identity. Sarma claims that the design showcases the state’s use of local materials and dedication to environmentally friendly, sustainable building. The new terminal is anticipated to greatly increase its capacity to handle passengers and cargo once it is open.
Officials announced that the airport’s annual passenger capacity will rise to approximately 1.31 crore, with the terminal accommodating nearly 4,500 passengers during peak hours. Improved cargo processing facilities are set to enhance connectivity and trade. The terminal features a “Sky Forest” design, advanced security systems, and modern amenities. An elevator corridor to Jalukbari is also planned for better accessibility. Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate the terminal and unveil an 80-foot statue of Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi, marking a pivotal moment for Assam. The project is viewed as a transformative development for Guwahati and the Northeast, reinforcing the city as a vital aviation and economic hub while showcasing Assamese heritage.
