Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, left for Switzerland to represent the northeastern state at the annual World Economic Forum meeting in Davos. This is the first time an Assamese official has attended the esteemed international conference. Sarma will interact with global economists, multinational chief executives, and representatives of international financial organizations like as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and World Trade Organization during the five-day conference, which takes place from January 19 to 23, 2026.
Sarma posted on social media site X after boarding a flight to Zurich after midnight: “Assam’s aspirations are getting new wings every day, and I look forward to meaningful discussions and agreements to strengthen our growth journey over the next few days.” India’s representation at Davos has significantly changed with the chief minister’s attendance. In the past, economically advanced states were chosen by the central government to exhibit at the yearly business summit. Assam’s inclusion among the selected states this year signifies acknowledgement of the region’s economic change.
Sarma is attending the World Economic Forum with over 17 scheduled meetings and plans to sign multiple MoUs. His agenda includes workforce development, tourism, healthcare, and showcasing Assam’s governance reforms, industrial growth, and technology-driven initiatives. Following the success of Advantage Assam 2.0, the visit is expected to boost foreign investment and partnerships, including in semiconductor manufacturing. Assam aims to position itself as a fast-growing state as global interest in India’s economy rises.
