Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday made a sensational statement in the Assam Legislative Assembly, asserting that legendary singer Zubeen Garg’s death during a yacht trip to an island in Singapore was not ‘culpable homicide’ but “murder.”Replying to an adjournment motion moved by the Opposition, Sarma said that based on preliminary information, the Assam Police had ruled out culpable homicide and had no doubt it was a case of murder. which is why, Section 103 of BNS was added to the case within three days of his death.“The state police, based on preliminary information, was sure that this was a case of murder. One of the accused killed Garg, while the others assisted him,” he said, while informing that four to five individuals are being booked in the case.It may be recalled that in the wake of the widespread outrage after the popular singer’s demise, over 60 FIRs have been filed across Assam, prompting the state government to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam Police to investigate the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death.”A thorough probe is being conducted by the SIT and that a watertight chargesheet will be filed in the case next month,” the chief minister said.A one-man inquiry commission, headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of Gauhati High Court, was also formed to conduct an independent probe. The commission has extended its deadline for recording witness statements and receiving evidence until December 12, 2025.
